Best Tresses of the 2009 Oscars

The Oscars are known to bring out Hollywood glamour and high fashion. At this year’s event, there was no shortage of alluring up-dos and dramatic makeup on the red carpet.

Stars such as Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman put a new twist on the bun. Kate Winslet was reminiscent of Grace Kelly with her wavy hair, smoothed back and pinned under to form a slight bun. Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway also showcased variations of the bun with subtle makeup to highlight their striking features. Buns are easy to recreate and by adding a side part like Hathaway or adding a decorative barrette as Portman did, will give any bun a romantic and sophisticated look perfect for a night on the town, a wedding, prom or any event.

The loose, tousled chignon was a favorite for Oscar attendees Vanessa Hudgens from Disney’s High School Musical and Miley Cyrus. While Vanessa chose more vibrant colors such as bright red lipstick to accentuate her makeup, the 16-year-old Cyrus opted for youthful peachy tones and coral lipstick.

An old look given new life was the half up, half down hairstyle for the evening. Whether it was showcased with loose tousles to bring attention to Jessica Biel’s caramel highlights or straight strands for Reese Witherspoon’s honey blonde hair, the Oscars were abuzz when Angelina Jolie arrived with voluminous chocolate curls to complement her half up, half down look.

This is an easy look to create with variations for straight or curly hair. It's always appropriate and always looks romantic and radiant for any face shape and all types of hair.

The Benjamin Button co-star, Taraji P. Henson, arrived looking polished and sleek with her straight hairstyle, side part and soft, side-swept bangs. Heidi Klum also arrived at the Oscars with straight, intense tresses. Both stars opted for dramatic, smoky eye shadow and soft pale lipstick.

Straight locks are easy to mimic using a flat iron. Depending on the length of your hair, you may want to choose either a wider or slimmer flat iron. Remember to use a smoothing serum to add shine and to smooth away flyaway hair.

Beyonce arrived at the awards show with her cat lined eyes and a sleek, low ponytail with ample curls. You can turn a simple ponytail into a sophisticated statement by covering the elastic band with a piece of your own hair. Simply pull a strand of hair from beneath the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic band and secure it with a bobby pin. Ponytails can be sleek or you can add curls for a sassy new look.

Ponytails look great when pulled together at the nape of the neck. And always use either a pomade or hairspray to smooth any loose pieces away from the face.

The gentlemen of the evening kept it clean and polished like Zac Efron who repeated his mature new sleek do on the red carpet, as Brad Pitt showed off his youthful spiky hairstyle during the awards show.

Using a little bit of gel or hair wax to bring definition and texture to spiky hair gives it more of an edge and it’s easy to mold and sculpt spiky hair with a bit of gel when the hair is dry.
